Struggling to Breathe is a composition for 2 Disklaviers - a modern take on the player piano. A Disklavier is operated by MIDI data (digital code with pitch, volume, articulation, and duration information) that is sent to a real acoustic piano. The data causes the hammers to strike and play in the same way a piano roll would have on an antique player piano.
I wrote the majority of this piece from a hospital bed in September of 2012. At the time I was quarantined for observation of an abscess in my left lung that was thought to be tuberculosis (it wasn't). I saw a call for scores for 2 Disklaviers with one being detuned a quarter-tone. It seemed oddly fitting that there would be two matching instruments with one of them slightly "broken" just like the state of my lungs. Struggling to Breathe was the first and only piece I composed in 2019, and followed a long hiatus when I was trying to figure out exactly what kind of music I wanted to write and what my personal voice was becoming. This was the piece that solidified that - dare I say "galvanized" what my music would become moving forward.
